Jolimont Winery: a tour you can't miss in the hills of Rio Grande do Sul

Jolimont Winery

Do you enjoy tasting good wine? Then you need to get to know Jolimont Winery! Especially if you're thinking of visiting the Serra Gaucha. Even now, at the end of the year, is an excellent time to visit the region because of the Natal Luz in Gramado and Christmas dream in Canela.

But talking specifically about Jolimont Winery or Jolimont Wineryshe is one of the pioneers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the production of fine and artisanal wines.

There are 27 hectares cultivated at an altitude of 830 meters, combined with the climatic conditions, the mountainous topography and the excellent condition of the soil. All this combination allows the fruit to ripen perfectly, forming the ideal Terroir: a set of factors that contributes to the production of a rare wine with a unique personality. Cool, right?

But where does the name "Jolimont" come from? That's what we're going to tell you next!

The history of Jolimont Winery

Jolimont Winery

In 1948, the Frenchman Jacques Brière founded the winery that would later be called Jolimont Winery.

Jolimont means "Beautiful Hill" in French, a reference to the location of the Jolimont estate.

Jolimont is a wine because it produces all its own grapes. In other words, it doesn't buy raw materials from third parties. This adds a great deal of value to the wine, since its production is limited, reducing its supply.

The current owner, Marçal Duarte Velho, is a lawyer and accountant, as well as being passionate about the world of wine. His father acquired the company in 1987, when the then Brière Winery already had relative recognition in the market, but needed improvements in terms of branding and positioning.

Marçal said that buying a winery was a mixture of dream and pragmatism:

"We knew we needed to have a defined growth and positioning strategy for our products."

At the very beginning of the 1990s, the company made an important strategic decision and decided to stop selling in large retail stores, in order to focus on the wine tourism.

In 1994, they established a partnership with CVC to leverage these activities, which came to represent approximately 60% of their sales.

In 2005, growing competition led the company to further increase its investment in visits, tours and tastings.

In addition, new products have been added to the portfolio: two types of beer, a sparkling muscatel, grape juice and other drinks. These innovations have added to the 30 existing products in the store which, even with the arrival of the pandemic, account for 90% of the company's sales.
